On Thursday 8th November, over 120 guests joined us at the famous National Maritime Museum in Falmouth for our second annual Cornwall Marine Conference. This year focused on the future of the marine industry – what challenges does it face and what can we do to adapt?
At Fastnet Marketing, we specialise in marketing solutions for the marine industry. Along with experienced accountants PKF Francis Clark and the specialist marine legal team from Stephens Scown, we hosted a fantastic evening of engaging conversation, thought provoking talks by industry-leading specialists and, of course, pasties and wine!
Sarah Leverton, MD of Fastnet Marketing, opened the conference with a welcome speech on how some companies in the marine industry succeed and why others fail. Drawing on Simon Sinek’s ‘Start With Why’, she explained the need to focus initially on WHY we do what we do, rather than WHAT we actually do in order to continue to grow in a competative marketplace.
Andy Brigden, Maritime Manager at Cornwall Council was next up to talk about the future of Cornwall’s ports and harbours. He explained the increased pressures and impacts on the coastal marine environment and landscape, and the opportunities to protect and enhance it, while improving accessibility.
Then, MD of Triskel Marine, Ken Wittamore, spoke to our guests about his observations on hybrid innovation. He explained the exciting possibilities and technological advances in the industry, and talked about Triskel’s award-winning Integrel system, their advanced generator replacement technology that saves up to 25% in fuel consumption.
After refreshments, leading yacht designer Nigel Irens, MD of Nigel Irens Design, spoke about the cutting-edge developments in vessel design and how ‘Slippery Boat’ technology is crucial to increasing both performance and comfort.
Our final speaker was Henk Wiekens, Joint MD of the world-class and award-winning Pendennis Shipyard. He explained the fascinating history of the shipyard as well as developments and improvements designed to future-proof it for many more years to come.
Once all the speakers had finished, there was a Q and A session, followed by the chance to network and chat with our specialists about the topics raised earlier.
The conference was a great success, with a lot of positive feedback including comments such as “Inspiring words. It’s always telling when you see faces in the crowd captivated by speeches that share their journey.”
We are now planning a larger event next year, so get in touch to find out more, and keep your eyes peeled for updates!
